Grid for Brazil's indoor Race Against Hunger

December 21, 2001 - Montoya and Kanaan Race Against Hunger

The "Race Against Hunger" karting event in Sao Paulo, Brazil was held December 17 and drew more than 80 karters, including Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya of the Williams-BMW F1 team and Brazilian Tony Kanaan of Mo Nunn Racing in the American CART series.

The event's objective was to collect food for the needy in Brazil. "I am an ambassador of the ONU in Columbia, and I could not pass this opportunity to campaign against hunger in Brazil" said Montoya.

Kanaan said he was happy to see the racers helping in the food collection for the Race Against Hunger and pleased to see Montoya at the event. "It is good to be able to do something to help these people. Also, it was a good chance to see my friends before Christmas and have some fun. I think it was great that Montoya was present."

Aside from Montoya and Kanaan, other motorsports stars were present including Alexander Barros, 500cc motorcycle racer, Hoover Orsi, Toyota Atlantic Champion, and Gastao Fraguas, former karting champion.

Nearly two tons of food were collected by the event, organized by Motor Video, while distribution of the food was almost immediate. "This event showed how much the racers are engaged in the aid of the people in need" said Sidney Silveira, director of the program Motor Video.

The 80 karters were divided into teams of six, with the team of Danilo Dirani, Carlos Iaconelli, Beto Rossi, BetoNini, Igor R., and Luis Gama prevailing. The event also boasted more than twenty journalists, who had the privilege of competing between themselves at the end of the event.
